Son of a bitch, it looks like another friggin’ federal election has the potential to be botched/fixed! The Republicans might not be directly responsible for it, but it looks like they’re sure trying to capitalize on it. This would make three in a row, folks (do some digging, and 2004 was even more questionable than 2000. It just didn’t get as much press). If this election gets tossed to the Republicans because of fraud or incompetence again, I’ll personally lead the revolution to remove them from the White House. This cannot stand!!
Send this (the article, not necessarily my ranting) to everyone you know. Get angry. Get proactive. It’s time to participate in our democracy beyond just turning in the ballot on election day. For those of you in the states mentioned (which includes you Colorado readers on the distro), contact your Secretary of State and let them know that this cannot and will not stand. If they try to pacify you by saying that provisional ballots will be issued, ask them what assurance they’re providing that those ballots will be counted. One thing all of us can do, regardless of where we live, is contact our local Congressmen and Senators and let them know how we feel about this.
In a functioning democracy, nothing is more important than our right to vote. To have that right tossed aside because of some bureaucratic mistake, whether intentional or unintentional, is a very grave matter. And in troubling times like these, our right to speak out and choose a leader we believe can lead us through them is more important than ever. Don’t let anyone ever take that away.
Here’s the article about the problem of “Tens of thousands of eligible voters in at least six swing states have been removed from the rolls or have been blocked from registering in ways that appear to violate federal law…”: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27093919/
A telling excerpt (from the ever-troublesome state of Ohio):
“On Monday, the Ohio Republican Party filed a motion in federal court against the secretary of state to get the list of all names that have been flagged by the Social Security database since Jan. 1. The motion seeks to require that any voter who does not clear up a discrepancy be required to vote using a provisional ballot.
Republicans said in the motion that it is central to American democracy that nonqualified voters be forbidden from voting.
The Ohio secretary of state, Jennifer Brunner, a Democrat, said in court papers that she believes the Republicans are seeking grounds to challenge voters and get them removed from the rolls.”
